I'm dyslexic so it's very hard for me to follow the Bible. I mostly learn from Sunday school and listen very closely. My problem though is that I don't know how to feel about scripture. I'm not inspired by it, and I can't relate with it. Movies and music always helped me, but the stories in the Bible don't have characters dealing with their problems. Jesus and God always got involved, and I don't feel like that happens anymore. I grew up loving God. Now, I feel all that love never helped anyone else but me. How am I supposed to do what the Bible says? I don't know how to change the way I think.

Keep praying eventhough you may feel nothing. God will honor your effort. If you seek Him, He will be found. Ask Him to give you a thirst for Him and for His Word. If you like to sing, worship Him and make the songs a prayer by singing them whole-heartedly. I do that. Sooner or later you will feel God's presence that is so beautiful.
You can listen to sermons online. Here are some of my fav that really bless me:

www.joycemeyer.org
www.sermonaudio.com (I particularly like Kevin Swanson, John
Barnett, John Pereira).
www.wordoftruthradio.com

The Bible says, "Faith comes from hearing and hearing from the Word of God." So keep reading and listening to His Word, then your faith will grow.

God bless!

Hey dont worry about it!

My brother is dyslexic so I know where your coming from with trying to read the bible (not the easiest!)

I question that stuff all the time. I'm even considering changing my religion as I dont feel that the one i'm in now "speaks" to me. I know what you mean about the people in the bible, but I think you'll find some stories in the old testament where God didnt get involved, or Jesus for that matter. The story of Naomi and Ruth springs to mind.

Also if you like music and movies then maybe listening to some CD's of "Spring Harvest" may help. Its like pop music with a religious feel! Its quite good. Also movies...I guess you could watch Passion Of The Christ. Thats a good film and it make help you to visualise better rather than reading.

Guess what !!??!! Your problem is not unique! And since others have been there before you, the answer is available.

One thing I must ask, though, is how you can communicate on the internet if your dyslexia is that much of a problem. I mean, I have a couple of friends who are dyslexic, as well as one d-in-law. For them, the computer screen can be just as difficault as a book. The most common solution that they have told me about is to invest in large print. The print is sharper, bolder, and naturally, larger, and the lines are spaced further apart, so the letters are not so likely to bleed together for them.

As to relating, and comprehension, you might want to try the NASB, or the Chronological Bible, or similar translations to help you better understand the scriptures.

Above and beyond all the above, however, is your relationship with Christ. You say you grew up loving God, but I wonder if you have ever actually given Him your heart and life. Remember, Jesus said, " I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." (John 6:35 NKJV). What Jesus is teaching us is that we do not need to change ourselves; He will feed us and nourish us, as we surrender ourselves to Him, accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. He will work in us, so we do not have to do any of the work on ourselves in order to understand with our natural mind. When you are surrendered unto Him ( it's scary, I know) He will enable your understanding. This is part of what throws sceptics into a frenzy: They cannot conceive allowing Anyone but themselves control in their lives. They prefer their out-of-control state, because they at least have the comfortable illusion of self control, and self determination.

There is so much more that could be said, but this is just a Q & A website, so I will simply pray that you find what you are seeking, and that God will fill you and bless you. Fruitfull search, and Joyfull answer!!

I find it strange that the scriptures don't inspire you. It's full of examples of ordinary people doing mighty works for God. Some of them would be called outcasts in today's world, yet God used them to perform miracles. He seems to favor the outcasts.

From what you say, it seems that you are a real good listener so it could be that your sunday school hasn't reached an inspiring part of the bible. My best advice to you is to get the bible on CD or cassette and listen to it when you can. Don't start in Genesis. Start in the Gospel of John or Romans and jump around to various scriptures. Remember that the Bible isn't one book but it's 66 books combined into one. It's okay to jump around in the Bible.

Good christian music does help. It doesn't have to be hymnal music either. Find a genre you like then go to your local christian bookstore for CD's under that genre. There's christian rap/hip-hop, christian rock and heavy metal, christian jazz, and the list goes on.

As for movies, "Matthew" does a very good job of visualizing the Gospel of Matthew and is very inspirational to me. Jesus is even portrayed as smiling and laughing with his disciples, unlike other Jesus movies I've seen. I believe this is how he really was, unlike how Hollywood portrays him.

Well, I hope this helps.

The bible is a book, it is a tool that can be helpful for some people if and when they need it.

Obviously this tool is not useful for you however you have found other useful tools such as music and movies so i would say definately go with that.
Don't change the way you think, your not out to get brain-washed here.
If you grew up loving god then don't let that change, just continue on.

You're right about the bible but and thats exactly why you shouldn't do everything it says because it applies to different audiences and in my opinion is getting a weee tad old to be running our lives!!! Thats my 2 cents.

When I read the bible, I first take some time in prayer. I ask God to reveal to me what he wants and to speak to me through the words. The bible isn't just a book, it is his living word. Meaning that it is an active way to commune with God. I find that whenever I pray before hand, God always speaks to me through the text. Also, I have found that the bible is full of things that go way over my head and sometimes confuse me like crazy. I will not let that get me down, if something confuses me or makes me question God, I ask him for guidance on that certain thing and to reveal the meaning.
The bible is a tool that God gave us to be used with our relationship with him. You can read the owners manual to a Ford, but you can't ever say you have driven one until you actually get in the seat and drive it.
The way you view God also has a lot to do with the way the word speaks to you.

The Bible is not God. And God is way more important than the Bible. So don't worry about it. Focus on your personal relationship with God.

Friend, That love you mention has helped me for over 36 yrs. When you don't know what to do or what to say, just go to the Lord, Just as you are, Remember that old song Just as I am, Just whatever we are, that is all we can present to God, & if we can just have a little faith, God will accept us & teach us as we grow in the Lord, We don't learn the whole bible overnight, for me, I have been serving God over 36 yrs. & I consider myself mature in the Lord, but I am still learning. Don't let satan torment your mind, Just tell God that you don't know what to pray or say, & tell him you are coming to him Just As You Are.

Hi

I don't have the answer to your question.. so I'll leave that to someone who may be better able to lead you, but I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate you and to give you the credit that you obviously deserve for having overcome the difficulties of your dyslexic disability.

I have a wonderful son-in-law who is faced with the same troublesome disability as yours and I know that dyslexia is no joke.

Good for you for working so hard, as I know you have had to, in order to live in our world of far to many letters and printed words.

So ...Keep on keepin' on... and Hang in there... You're a heck of a human being for this triumphant accomplishment.
