The horrible pain you experience from a migraine is from the DILATING OF BLOOD VESSELS. First they constrict at the onset of the headache, then they dilate and this is the intense pain you experience. Migraine remedies like Imitrex, Maxalt, etc... are all VASOCONSTRICTORS. They constrict the blood vessels; thus reducing the pain.

I don't know what kind of headaches you have , but I'm blessed with migraines, and I can tell you that when I get a migraine, there aren't enough pain pills in the world to make it go away. Because I've had a stroke, my neurologist won't allow me to take Imetrex, so I'm forced to go to have my husband take me to the hospital for for a shot of Demerol. Even that doesn't make my migraine go away, and when I wake up after sleeping several hours, my migraine still there. Caffeine didn't work for me. I can sympathize with you. . I've been having migraines ever since I've been 21, and I'm now 50. They are so bad, that they have left plaque in my brain, and a doctor told me that I had MS. After having stroke , which was the result of so much vomiting and dehydration from a migraine, I burst a blood vessel and had to spend almost 3 weeks in a hospital, the doctors discovered I didn't have MS at and the plaque was from my migraines. Well, I digress :-) Good luck in finding something. I hope you will find something that works for you. I never could.

The pain from a migraine is caused from the blood vessels of the brain dilating and spasming so the only thing that's going to stop the pain of the migraine is some thing that's going to open up the vessels again either a migraine medication like imitrex, or time. There are also medications you can take to help prevent migraines from occurring. Hope this helps.

just like the other poster said, imitrex & the other triptans are vasoconstrictors & they actually target the major blood vessels in your brain. that's why other pain killers dont work.... they dont do a thing for the vascular component of the migraine... and that is what makes a migraine hurt is the blood vessels doing their thing. I know, I get them too.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

have you ever tried excedrin migraine? i use it and it works almost every time. i have tried some perscription meds but none of them really worked well. the pain is from blood vessels being dialated more than normal. the increased blood flow causes the pain and pounding.

Just when you feel an attack coming on get someone to massage the back of your neck, just around the nape, I've found that will sometimes even stop it happening, and will definitely reduce the pain
