Hi there again...will she use the toilet without the litter? You are asking about the human toilet correct? Because you are mentioning a step where the litter has to be decreased. If so, she may be ready for the next step in the training process. One of my cats did this as well so I decided to stop putting litter and he was fine to use the toilet.

If she's having trouble then consider going back a step or two until she consistently is comfortable with the previous toilet training step with the pan filled with litter. If the pan is flimsy and not solid cats will have a more difficult time with the training process because they fee like they are going to fall into the toilet. Defecating (pooping) is the hardest part of the training for cats. The reason is because they have to find the proper stances/footing on the toilet seat in order to balance themselves because when they defecate they arch upward and will wobble. On a narrow ledge this can be mentally difficult for them to overcome so you have to wait it through it until they become more comfortable before moving forward.

Here's a website which provides the steps of toilet training for cats: http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

I found a toilet training forum for cats: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/kitty_on_the_toilet/ People exchange ideas here as well as experiences and perhaps you'll find some useful tips from all the current and past discussions here.

Cats feel vulnerable when they use the litter so it's important to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Make sure the tray is not too shallow/too deep and remove solids regularly.

During this difficult phase, place several layers of old newspaper under and around the tray, and also fold up some pages to line the bottom of the tray with.

Does your cat go to toilet outside at all? If so, watch her behaviour. It may be that she dislikes using the litter completely. My partner's cat was a rescue tom who would refuse to use the litter (luckily, he never had any 'accidents').

Some other things to check:

1) Some cats dislike certain types of litter. My cats like the recycled paper litter and the Cat-San brand, but dislike the clay type and wood chip varieties.

2) Cats do not like being watched by anyone- including people and other pets- whilst they use the litter.

3) Some cats will use the litter, but are unsure of what to do afterwards! One of mine goes to toilet, and starts scratching at the tray, walls and carpet- but does not manage to cover his poop up! He was litter-trained as a rescue cat aged four years old and will only use the litter if he is not allowed outside. Our previous cats- kittens- never experienced any problems.

Good luck!

Cat's just know how to use litter pans, it's nuts... But I think your kitty might be doing this because she's really particular about it being dirty, maybe scoop it right away... Also, if it's easy for her to kick out the sand, you might want to try a deeper pan rather than less litter. Try it out :-) Good luck.

she's pushing your buttons.
after she's had a meal, wait about 20 mins, then pick her up and put her in the tray, and scratch in the littler with your fingers. she knows how to do it, but if you keep it up, she will know you mean business.
also, if she's still very little, maybe take a wet cotton ball, put her in the tray, and swap her bottom, the mother does that to induce excretion. maybe she just got a bit waylaid.
but honestly i think she's just pushing your buttons.
take whatever poop she makes elsewhere, and put it in the tray. maybe also leave the sand there, and only take out feces. so that the smell remains for her so she knows that's her poop. the smell of the new sand may be confusing her.

My cat would push all the sand out and then poop in it... they want to bury their poop if theres not enough sand they will find a way. I found that putting dirt in the cat box worked, also watch and the second they start to head to the bathroom pick them up and put them outside, there is only so long they can hold it.

Maybe try to change the place of the toilet train to see if he goes in there.
