I saw a documentary set in an African counrty, about a drug that can be given to women during labour which prevents the HIV virus from being transmitted to the baby. Does anyone know of a charity who supports HIV victims and helps to provide this drug?
I would also like to give to a British charity supporting children who live in poverty in the UK.
This is my philosophy:
I have a lot of friends and family, but I never go christmas shopping, (apart from for a few presents for the kids in my family) I donate the money to charity and send everyone an email, hence avoiding cards, wrapping paper, plastic bottles of smelly stuff, and other junk. Its is lovely to send gifts, but I just prefer to celebrate this way.

There are many institutions which provide the drug but its highly expensive. GOTO WHO website you will find your nearest one.

I don't know about the African-based charity you refer to, but Save the Children and Oxfam also do excellent work in Africa.
Try www.oxfamunwrapped.com for some practical gifts.

For a national charity supporting children living in poverty in the UK, the NSPCC is an obvious one, or there are big organisations like Comic Relief/Sport Relief that distribute money to hundreds of mainly small charities.

Failing that, perhaps you could do a Google search along the lines of "children's charities in...." and enter the area where you are living.

Oh, and please accept my congratulations and thanks (as someone involved with a children's hospice charity) for your thoughts at this time of year. Merry Christmas!

if you are looking for a national charity then i would suggest Barnardos or NSPCC but why not look for something more local to where you live coz they are quite often struggling for funding more than the big nationals

what a brilliant idea, shame there aren't more like you!

Happy Christmas
