I'm a senior in high school and i have to pick a college and a major. at first i thought social sciences, political science, social work. but then i thought maybe law, it would be good to know what people can and can't do, the constitution and whatnot. All i want to do is help people in every aspect of their lives, i want to be the go-to-person, if its family issues, financial, political,
their rights, etc. i think i may be biting off more than i can chew, i don't know. i just need to hurry up an find out what i'm going to do before it's too late. i know people say i have plenty of time, but it doesn't feel that way, so i would rather make a decision now. should i do social science or law, or both? it's just so confusing.

First off, you don't get to do law as an undergrad. You can do pre-law, but really law schools just want you to have a well rounded general education. The best thing you can do to get into law school is go to the highest ranked college you can get in to, and then kick asss with your GPA.

So first get into a top 25 school. Pick a major that interests you, but has real world application (12 ca textile majors may have loved college but they don't get jobs).

Only after you've graduated with an excellent GPA should you decide whether to go to Law School, get a Masters/PhD in another field, or work.

Hello,

It is a very good idea to make a decision early as to which career path you will pursue.

My personal opinion is that there are already too many lawyers. Unfortunately, many of them have a very warped version of being helpful to people. Of course, you can do what you want as the decision is yours, but I think you can be more helpful to people by becoming a doctor and healing the sick or perhaps a scientist attempting to discover a cure for a dreaded disease, like cancer or AIDS. The only other occupations which I consider "helpful" to people are soldiers, firemen, policemen and teachers. I don't know if that is a route you would consider taking, but my opinion is that they are certainly more helpful than lawyers or social workers, etc.

I have a political science degree and although I love the field (although I don't use it for my occupation) and find it interesting, it is not helpful (in the true sense of the word) to anyone.

Well, I don't know if this is what you want to hear, but I hope it helps.
