so that you can navigate the phone pad if for any reason you cannot see it - ie: smoke filled room, blinded by chemicals, or quite simply if you are blind.

It is to help you navigate round the keypad by touch alone. The 5 is in the middle so you can locate all the other keys from there. Useful if you are looking at your note of the number, you can dial without having to look at the phone.

I imagine it's like the dots on the f and j keys of a keyboard. So people (especially the visually impaired) can locate the center of it.

I have a friend who is blind and she uses the dot to navigate her way around the numbers. She even sends me text messages. You can also ind a dot on the five at cash dispensers and the new chip and pin machines.
