Dear Danny C,
Speaking as an ex herion addict and also someone who works in the prison system, the reason needles are sterilised after each use is to stop them from becoming blocked with blood thats left in the end of the needle, if its not rinsed while its still fluid it dries out and blocks the needle.

Needles are supplied sterilised in sealed packs. They may need to be re-sterilised if they get contaminated after opening but not as a general rule.

So although it's an interesting question I'm afraid it's based on a fallacy.

It's to protect the staff administering the injection from unlawful murder.

If the person died in a manner other than decided by the Court, then someone somewhere is in BIG trouble and could find themselves on death-row as a reult of their actions.

That's what I would call an "Oops event".

Needles only come sterilized. All medical needles are sterilized by the manufacturer. Used needles are too dull to get into the blood vessel easily.

So it isn't a money factor, it is just how things are supplied.

The needles are disposable so they are not sterilized or used again.
