I'd say certain folks couldn't be blamed for viewing it as evil. It could have been the theme song for The Crusades.

Of course it would become evil if people apply its meaning literally and start to make war with other people. The meaning of the war mentioned in that song is fighting against the temptation of the devil or satan. It is rather resisting to do evil things. Doing what God wants us to do, denying our evil nature, and trying to obey HIm in everything He commands us, and try to help other people doing good, that constitues the warfare of Christians.
In fact Jesus told us to love even our enemies and to turn our other cheek if somebody slap us on one side.

no its not evil, i've heard people say that as a christian you are not really a soldier, not in a military way, or not a soldier of the Lord, but the bible says: 2Timothy 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
2Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
onward christian soldiers should become the cry of the church once more before its to late

It isn't sung much any more cause people (here in the US) think it is talking about a physical war with guns and bloodshed. But the song is talking about engaging in spiritual warfare - praying, loving, telling people about jesus, encouraging people to believe - not about Iraq or Afganistan!
God bless!!
With the cross of Jesus going on before!
