Hi-Fi basically mean high fidelity being able to produce audio frequency range of 20-20k.

A home theater system can be labeled as a hi-fi system in which the term can be construed colloquially as a "good sounding system." There isn't any distinction between whether there's a 2 channel or 5.1 system when using that term.

For your computer, I would recommend a sound card that is THX certified with 24-bit/192kHz @ stereo or 24-bit/96kHz for 5.1.

I have a Soundblaster THX certified Audigy 2 sound card and it is awesome and superior to most products out there. If you're looking for professional studio quality, expect to invest in several thousands of dollars for studio engineering quality.

If all you're interested in games and to produce rich, clean, decent, music, then expect to spend about $250.00 for a sound card. Speakers are very important as well, so don't discount the quality of the speakers you're planning to invest.
