Preliminary reports from Newsweek state they will dodge the issue of what the size of the US troops presence in Iraq should be.

They will also dodge a specific timetable for withdrawal.

President Bush is still saying "we will not withdraw troops" and "the only way we will leave is with victory". So if the American people have any hopes of a better plan from the Baker - Hamilton Reports, forget it. It's not going to happen. Do you agree or not? & why?

Well, let's just say that hope dies hard.

I think Baker is in an excellent position to be more of a realist and less of a propogandist or a yes-man than the usual Bush advisors. The Bush administration is not very good at selecting and listening to those who give the right advice (Joe Wilson, etc), but they will have to listen to Baker. The US is in serious trouble now. Everyone knows it. Why would Baker step forward at this point in his life just to blow some smoke? To blow smoke would be to fail, quite conspicuously, in his mission to the entire country.

It is possible for Baker to fail in obtaining some kind of "good" outcome by doing his best. But if he blows smoke, it will mean something is seriously wrong at the top.

I think it's the American people who will lead the way to change the course of the Iraq war.

I think you are right on the money.

From what I've heard, they are going to give the Iraqis the timetables, and if they don't comply (which they won't), then we'll use that as an excuse to start leaving.

I hereby grant the US victory in Iraq.

Now go home.
