Stereotypes, stereotypes, stereotypes. I have lived in Georgia almost my whole life. I have been living in north Atlanta and going to school downtown for a while, and it is great. Contrary to popular belief, it is a beautiful city, and not at all dirty. The people are nice. You can be walking down the street and people you don't know will say hi to you and smile.

People assume that just because rap is popular here that there is more crime but the truth is it is a very racially diverse city and people from all over the world are very accepted here. People are open-minded and fun. There is a lot to do. There is no more crime than any other city. I can walk down the streets of downtown Atlanta and feel perfectly safe. Downtown is probably the worst area for homeless people and beggers, but it is not bad at all. If that scares you, stay in midtown or uptown (buckhead). Those areas are great for bars/clubs/restaurants and Buckhead is great for shopping.

The traffic is pretty bad most of the time. Everyone insists on driving, and the train system does not want to expand.

There of course will be culture shock for you, as I'm sure there would be no matter where you choose to go. Just remember, don't listen to the stereotypes, and you will have a lot of fun in Atlanta!

I have lived in GA since I was 3. I live just outside of the city. I love Atlanta and have never been to another city that I liked better and I travel. There are lots of nice places to live in Atlanta that are safe and friendly. On top of that, Atlanta has been making alot of changes as far as trying to up the class of some parts of the city. I would recommend moving to the west, nw, north and downtown parts of the city. Cobb County is a very nice residential county as well as lots of job opportunity. It is only minutes away from downtown Atlanta.

It is nice. Part of it are not safe. If is huge and lots of traffic.

Houses are expensive but not anything like the expense of a home in NSW.

I lived both places and I like Sydney better but Atlanta is more fun

I'm from the UK originally & I have lived in Atlanta for 20 years. It's a great place, it's pretty safe, and the people, in general, are great.

The culture shock thingy isn't a big deal either. Most of the locals speak a form of English.

Half the people in Atlanta are black so it can be somewhat of a culture shock at first. Some parts of Atlanta can be dangerous. It's safer to live in the suburbs. Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County. West Cobb is a nice place to live. Out past Cobb, there is Paulding and Cherokee counties, and they are nice places to live.

PS> You'll like it.

I personally do not like atlanta, but a lot of people do. It is extremely congested, and dirty. A huge part of the population does not speak english. There are nice parts, it just depends on your budget. If you don't want to live in the city, or can't afford to, live in Smyrna.
Any further questions, send me an email.
Good Luck.

Hey! It IS safe, you just need to live in the right area. If you are looking to be close to downtown and safe look into midtown, buckhead, and if an apartment says in it's in midtown just make sure it is "north" of the city. The southside tends to be where the crime happens. Also, if that is too expensive for you, look for apartments in decatur, smyrna and marietta. They are very nice areas, have cheaper rent and are still a short drive to downtown. Don't be scared, we are nice here I promise!!!
