Your question is very relevant. You are right in saying that Christmas and Santa Claus is a joke. Most Christians do not know that Jesus could not have been born on the 25th of December, since it would be freezing cold on that day in Palestine. There would be no grass outside and shepherds do not keep their sheep outside at night in the open air. 25th of December is the birth day of the Sun God, in Latin called Dies Natalis Solis before Christianity came into existence. It is the shortest day of the year, and the following day the it gradually became longer again. So hundreds of years before Christ was born in Bethlehem, the people in Euroope had been celebrating the birth-day of the sun on that day and exchange gifts, decorated the evergreen trees as a symbol of life. Jesus must have been born either in March or October, but derinitely not in December. Jesus never told his desciples to celebrate His birth, but only his death and resurrection and not once a year but as often as possible in the communion service or the Lord's supper.
Most of the accidents happen during holidays every year. Santa Claus is not only a big joke but a big lie invented to make people doubt about God and Christianity. Children in their innocence believe in Santa Claus, but later they realized that they have been deceived by their parents to scare them or bribe them to behave. This experience is a seed that bear fruits of doubts in many children's lives as they turned into adulthood. It is sad but it is true. The only people who really benefit from it are the retailers.

Most everyone gets time off on Christmas, it's the most convenient that way. There's a nice feel about snow and hot cocoa, but it could be done anytime of the year if everyone got the day off.
