The SAT is more math-oriented than the ACT, which is a similar test. Some colleges accept only the ACT, some the SAT, and some either one, but if you are not skilled in math, the ACT is probably better for you to take - just make sure you go to a college that accepts the ACT. There are also SAT II subject tests, for Chemistry, world history, alg II, etc... and, again depending on what college you go to for how many, you need to take some of those. You should take all of those tests (or the ones you choose to take) at the end of your junior year, but there are practice tests offered for sophomores and juniors as well. Some schools offer the practice tests at the school, but I suggest going to the front office to find out where you can take the tests in your area.
So my final answer is: Take the ACT, take 2 or 3 SAT II subject tests (for your strongest subjects), and take the practice tests sophomore year to prepare for those.
Keep in mind that all the tests will cost some money though, so if your family is financially unstable, then you don't need to take the practice tests.
Hope that helps!

SAT 1: The basic one. Involves math and english. You do a math part, move on to an english part, move on to a math part, etc. It goes on for 3 hours.

SAT II: A more mix-and-match affair. You pick whether you want to do math, english, US history, Spanish, science or other stuff.

You can't really study for it, since the questions will be at the discretion of those who make the tests. Just be sure to have a solid foundation on the subjects and that you're not zoning out on test days.

Also, you can take the SAT II at the end of junior year or at the beggining of senior year.

If you will type in SAT practice Tests with audio help and search the web you will find lots of sites that offer practice tests and actually has a voice to help you through the math problems...my daughter took the SAT test back in October and studied for it in this way, It helped her a lot. There are at least three kinds of SAT tests, but she chose to take the basic one. SAT 1 and SAT2 is much harder. I think your guidance councelor at school can help you decide which one you wiil need to take. Good Luck. You'll do fine...
