My chow is an outdoor dog and always has been. When it seems too cold we attempt to bring her in the garage along with our minnie pincher but she refuses.

chows are for colder weather, just like huskies becuase they have thick fur and a undercoat..your chow is probably trying to tell you that it loves the snow or cold weather...some dogs flourish in it!..short haird breeds such as you pincher should be indoors when the weather is nasty...

Chows can stand the cold cause of their fur,,, on the other hand your Miniture Pincher shouldnt be left out when is cold at all cause they are cold natured I would potty train your Miniture Pincher and have it in the house cause like i said they are very cold natured,, I hve a Miniture Pincher and he gets cold very easily but for the Chow is probably telling that she doesnt want to go inside cause she is comfertable out side cause of all the fur she has,,, I hope this helps and good luck on your dogs

Do you at all have an option to create a doggie door into your garage so that your Chow can go in when she wants to? At least you will know she'll go in when it's too cold out even for her.

First of all. Just like humans, dogs need to be acclimatized to the weather they are in. start by letting the dog out for short periods of time, with supervision. start with just a few minutes (enough time for them to take care of business). then increase the amounts of time that they are out. If the dog is going to be outside for long periods of time. there should be shelter available for the dog to get into if it starts to get cold. a solid dog house with straw is best. I run sled dogs in AK and have dogs with short coats and heavy coats. BUT they have time to get used to the cold and grow the undercoat as the weather gets colder in the fall. the main thing is SUPERVISE your dog when it is outside. provide shelter, and don't forget water. Animals and humans can dehydrate just as fast and sometimes faster in the winter than summer.
