This calls for espionage. Use a mutual friend (if possible) to subtly drop a hint. The person should not simply blurt it out, but in a round-about way ask what he thinks about you.

A smart enough person can say somehting simple about something nice you did, or how you looked and see what his feedback is. It's a bit silly, but it works.

If the guy thinks you're a sea hag, you can find out without embarassing yourself.

It's either that, or charge right in and let him know you are interested.
