Lack of love for God, for if you truly love God with your whole heart, mind and strength he gives you the power to love others.
That is why it is the first commandment.
The First Commandment is the most basic requirement for beginning to understand God’s truth and to fulfill our ultimate purpose. All humanity is warned to put God first, and to avoid false gods. The Being who issued that first and great commandment rephrased it in Matthew 22:37.

Notice: “Jesus said unto him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.” In this New Testament passage, Christ was essentially quoting words that He inspired in Deuteronomy 4:5.

The only way to stop the hate and violence is to learn to love oneself. Loving others isn't enough. Until you can admit your hurt, forgive others because you didn't stand up for yourself or were weak and forgive yourself because no one is perfect, and begin to follow your passions, gain accomplishments, build your dreams, you can't even begin to love yourself nor find happiness in this life. You may think you're happy, but unless you've reached that level, you're simply escaping. Self-love is born of honest effort in life, nothing less. All the evil, vicious, violent criminals out there must be stopped, and good honest civilized people must stand up for what's right and stop them.

There is nothing but hate and anger in this world. The only way to destroy hate is with love. The problem is that with all of the anger people now have towards one another, there isn't enough love to go around. Strangley the religions are at the core of this anger.

I don't even love my actual brother. I think it's silly to call every human being a brother or sister.

Cain didn't have much love for his brother, obviously. No, you don't have to love them; you just have to put up with them.
