Yet they were engaged, so wouldn't that be incestous? Or were they so distantly related that it didn't matter? If indeed they actually were?

(Asking this based on a reply to another question I saw)

They were both descendants but distant descendants of David. Even now it is OK to marry a second cousin in most states, hundreds of years separated Joseph and Mary from David, so they were far enough away for the relation not to count when referring to incest. It only counted with prophecy, if Jesus parents had not been of King David's family he could not have been the Messiah.

Both Joseph and Mary have ancestries that link them back to David. If this is true (and it's possible; David would have a large number of ancestors) they would be too distantly related to make it incest. It is possible, however, that in order to emphasize that Jesus was a descendent of David, either Matthew or Luke did a little fudging with the geneologies. Can't say for sure.

The point of the lineages were to show how through both parents Yeshua was of the tribe of Judah. About 1900 years earlier it would have been a problem because Judah wasn't a tribe yet but just him and his family. But there is about 1900 years and many generations between Judah and Yeshua's time. So with so many years and generations, also with the inclusion of converts added to the tribe, Joseph and Mary were both of the tribe of Judah, sharing a common ancestry, but were distant enough not to matter. Other wise Yeshua would have been born with genetic damage.

And looking at both lineages, the closest common reletive would have been King David, and there are enough generations between them and King David.

Matthew and Luke record the geneology of Mary and Joseph. While showing that they were both relatives of David that they were distant enough to permit the marriage

I believe that Joseph was in the line of David. You can read the geneology in Matthew.

It was not uncommon for cousins to marry back then. Nowadays most people don't know their cousins past about one generation, but back thenextended families were more connected so perhaps 4th , 5th or 6th cousins married. By then the gene pool would be very diluted

Yes, Jesus came in the line of King David. You can check out Matthew Chapter 1 for the detailed genealogy.

Yes they were both descendants of the line of David.
They were very distant in relation, so it would not be considered incest.
