Bush is asking for NATO to use more troops in Afganistan to relieve some of the pressure on the American and British troops deployed in the region, how long will it be before he will ask them to take over the peacekeeping role in Iraq while he slips his troops out of the backdoor? Should the Americans be made to clear up the mess they have made, and not rely on the kindness of NATO?

America, whether under Bush or not, would never join or participate in any pan-National group unless they can use, manipulate and gain from their fellow members.

The problem with his attempt to engage troops in Afghanistan or Iraq is that the Treaty (ie the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) may not legally permit such engagement for the reasons posited by Bush.

And the NATO leadership may decide Bush's request would be more appropriately sent to the United Nations for troops to keep the peace (which is all UN troops are allowed to do, since they're not permitted to use firearms unless first fired upon).

So, any request for troops from NATO would indicate an intention to attack first, offensively and in force.

And to answer your question, I would have to conclude yes - Bush shall use NATO as a buffer and relief strategy for US troop levels in the region - if, and only if, NATO let him away with it.

But "we" don't get to decide. There will be no referendum on the subject, and the decision will be made in our name by people who did not stand for public election and therefore cannot be removed by way of a popular vote.

NATO is a useless organization. Always ready to demand help from the US but when the US was attacked - did nothing but criticize.

Look at what happened with the Serbia-NATO war. The US did all of the hard work and the rest of NATO sat around and whined.

It is long past time for the US to pull out of NATO.

I think USA are always starting a war and than ask European `friends` (NATO) to help them with clearing up the situation... It'll be not long when UK like France and Germany decide not to send their boys dying for the US's interests
