Emla cream is a prescriptive skin anesthetic that is often used for an hour under an occlusive dressing prior to certain skin procedures.

We really don't use it for tattooing as it wears off fairly quickly after removing it from the skin while tattooing and if anesthesia is required for like cosmetic tattooing, there are actually better over the counter strength preparations for broken skin once the tattooing starts.

Many artists don't like the way the skin "feels" under the needle with Emla either. I would pass personally.

Emla cream (9%) can be used prior to tattoo application HOWEVER... it distorts the skin which means your tattoo may not be as great as you hoped.

It's not a cleanser, so you can't really use it afterwards.

Hope that helps. :)
