Running/walking on the treadmill, will only get you so far. The more vigorous an exercise, the more benefits you will reap. However, you must know when to stop and not over do it. You must gradually work up to increasing your fitness. Nothing happens over night, accept Santa Claus. Hehehe.
I recommend running, if you are able. This day in age, you want to do things efficiently in an effort to save time. Running is more productive than jogging and walking. Only if you have limitations of some kind, should you either jog or walk. That's not to say, don't ever do those activities but your primary aerobic exercise and cardio vascular conditioning, is best to come from running.
On the other hand, implementing resistance training (meaning weight lifting), will greatly improve your over all level of fitness and will contribute to burning much more calories. I would stick to basic, maximum stimulation movements because they yield more results. Try these: dumbbell/barbell curls, cable pressdowns/triceps extensions, push-ups/bench press, leg presses/squats, crunches and leg raises/knee-ups, military press/dumbbell shoulder press, barbell row. Perform the above exercise in a circuit. What this means is, you will perform one set of each exercise, back-to-back. Try and do them without resting in between until you finish all the exercises or the circuit. Then repeat 1 or 2 times more. Keep your repeitions for each exercise between 10-15.
Remember to eat cleanly. Your diet is a huge factor in relation to achieving success. Have a macronutrient split of: 40% carbohydrates, 40% protein, and 20% fat. Your food sources should come from lean meats like: turkey, chicken, lean beef, fish, and eggs, potatoes, pasta, rice, whole grain bread, oatmeal, olive oil, fish oil, minimal animal fat and dairy fat, nuts, fruit (berries, citrus fruit, melons), fibrous vegetables (broccoli, lettuce, etc.).
Ideally, you'll want to consume about 4-6 small meals daily. It sounds like a lot but it isn't. The purpose of this is to regularly nourish your body. By doing this, you won't feel hungry all the time and you get a steady feeding of nutrients. This is vital to maintaining a healthy active body.
As far as calories are concerned, I would consume between 1500 and 2000. The best way to be certain is, if you feel a lack of energy all the time, increase your calories. If you find your self gaining weight, decrease your calories by 100 per day. Assess yourself weekly and not daily.
Keep a journal of all training and food eaten. This will allow you to keep track of your progress and help you identify problems. Other than all that, be consistent. Don't quit because results aren't happening right away. Things like this take time. Have some patients and you will have the healthy body you want. Good luck!

The key is to get your heart rate up during any exercise; walking, running, cleaning the house,etc.. It all burns calories, but if you don't get your heart rate up you're burning as many calories as sitting in front of the computer....nada

it depends upon with wich speed u re walking/running on a tread mill. if u re walking with your puls hardly being over 100 beats a min u re not doing absolutely anything for your body. your heart rate should be more than 120 all the time - in that case u re losing weight. tread mill should be equivallent to running. and those people u know who re walking and not losing weight just walk slowly - so no use
