From what I read in wikipedia, Ubuntu is a free OS. Does that mean I can have it along with Windows? Or will it operate within Windows? Also, there was something written about it coming along with OpenOffice and Firefox. Please give a detailed answer.

When you install Ubuntu, it will ask you if you want to erase the current partitions or if you want to use the existing free space. I think you may have to erase your current Windows partition, and then create a new space in the Ubuntu setup so that Windows can be installed. Once GRUB is installed, it will let you select either Ubuntu or Windows. It's been a long time since I dual-booted Linux and Windows. I gave up after Windows screwed up on installing XP SP2.

Anyway, for a person that has never used Linux before, I would highly reccomend Ubuntu, except for that its setup can be a bit challenging. It does come with OpenOffice and Firefox and Gaim, which is about the best IM app ever, and all three are also available for Windows. You definitely need to use the Ubuntu Guide, though.

As LA knight said, yes you can. Once you partition the hard drive, Ubuntu will be installed alongside your windows OS. What it installs is called a GRUB screen which allows you to choose between which operating system you wish to run at startup.

BTW, great choice on Ubuntu. It's an awesome opensource OS.

at the beginning once you boot up the ubuntu cd, it asks you the place to place in the os and on which partiton. interior an identical exhibit, you may edit the partitioning gadget. whilst it shows you the available partitions opt for between the partitions and format it in linux format and deploy in that partition. you would be waiting to twin boot between domicile windows and ubuntu after that.

Yes, you can setup your computer to dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu.

You can also run Ubuntu from within a virtual PC inside of Windows XP - see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

Good luck
