What causes it? Also, are ex-smokers "never the same" after they become chemically dependent. I mean sure, they can get off it...but are they ever the way they were before?

Not always, but yes its quite often becaues the time they have when they would've been smoking, they eat to reduce boredom but still quit or you could die.

Nicotine actually acts as an appetite suppressant, so not having it in your body anymore makes you want to eat more. Ex-smokers also turn to putting food in their mouths to keep from putting a cigarette in it. When precautions are taken for these two symptoms, however, you won't gain weight by quiting smoking.

Once the chemicals are out of your body, you will be closer to "the way you were", but it will take some time to get your body back into shape after possibly years of purposely poisoning it.

Much of the immediate weight gained by smokers is water from the body's cells rehydrating. This is a good thing. Unfortunately unless you watch your diet, are careful about satisfying the craving for a smoke with a smoked ham, and exercise a little you will more than likely gain. I quit smoking almost 2 years ago and I gained weight. I just need to exercise and diet and I will be able to lose the weight.

Last year I started smoking for fun. When I saw that it got out of control I decided to quit. I was a smoker only for six months but quitting made me really big. I could wear only couple of things and I didn't want to buy the new clothes since it would mean that I gave up my old size. It's been four months since I'm enjoying the fit me. I've lost all of the new fat and even the old one. So, it takes time but it is possible.

For a while yes you gain weights. But then you go back to normal. The reason is appetite.. :) You taste everything better, and everytime you remember smoking you put somthing in your mouth. SO there you go. If you stick to celery you won't gain.. Buy if you go with celery plus a fat salad dip then you gain my friend.
Try quiting. It worths.. I'm still smoking and chewing celery because I still like smoking. If you're ready stick to celery.

Many people tend to replace smoking with eating, therefore they get fatter. If a better substitute is found, chances are pretty slim you will gain weight.
