This extreme covering up is enforced by men who are insecure and use their religion as a means of exercising excessive control over women. It's not a religion thing it's a man thing.

It is a very long story, but briefly it is something like this:
In ancient Egypt there were these so called (Harem) a dancing place of the past civilisation. these harems were a mix with what is known today as (brothels).
Only the Pharaoh were allowed to see the faces of the virgin dancing girls. These Pharisaic (hypocritical) people, had decided to have more than one woman for their wives.
Jealousy came over the older women in the harem for the new ones, and the Pharaoh wrath with anger said "I don't want to see your faces anymore." Ha,ha.

Here is your answer in the Quran:
“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59)
“O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.” (Quran 7:26)
Here is your answer in the Bible:
First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 11. Read verses 3-10.
But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraces his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not covered, let her be shaven. But if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. A man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God. But woman is the glory of man. For man was not created for woman, but woman for man. This is why the woman ought to have a sign of authority over her head, because of the angels.

The historical details are murky. The Qur'an tells women to dress modestly; it does not go into particulars.

Why does the Pope wear a dress instead of trousers? Leave people alone.

If I was a Muslim sister, I'd wear whatever I wanted to. If it pleases your allah, who cares what others think. But thank GOD, I'm not.
