Yes it can.
But more importantly you can expect kitty
to get revenge when you least expect it, like
while sleeping. If you notice your cat under the
covers in bed with you slowly pulling the covers down
over both your heads, WATCH OUT!

Ours gives us a dirty look, with her head pulled back a bit. It's clearly a terrible affront to her dignity.
"Sophie," I say, "it was _just_ a _fart_." No deal. Still that look.
To answer your question about brain damage: no.

I have noticed that cats generally don't react when someone farts at them. My son does it sometimes at our cat, and she doesn't seems to care or notice. Dogs, however, get pretty insulted when you fart at them.

LOL, try having a large dog sleep with you that farts!!! he also burped! it was crazy! i think he though he was human! he even watch t.v.& sat on things with his but on it and his front feet on the floor!!!!!
