In most of my patients, they used water to try to overcome hunger pangs and bloated. Most of my patients with parasitic infestations were emaciated and cachexic.

The condition may be referred to as kwashiorkor (hope the spelling is correct). Wikipedia had a good explantion of the details on the swollen stomach. The ascites resulted from hypoalbuminemia. Albumin is responsible for mainting the osmotic pressure in the blood vessels. Hope this helps.

The swollen abdomen is generally attributed to two causes: 'ascites' due to altered oncotic pressure as a result of hypoalbuminemia (low albumin in the blood) and grossly enlarged liver due to fatty liver. This fatty change occurs because of the lack of apolipoproteins which transport lipids from the liver to tissues throughout the body.

As they are dying of hunger, they always try to find something to eat, even unclean and/or possibly harmful stuffs. As a result, they cannot disgest such things and they stay in their stomachs. This make their stomachs bigger.

when your body is starving, it starts to take nutrition from your body, since its not getting it from food. One of the places it starts to take it from are the intestines in your stomach. The acids in your stomach start working to "disgest" your intestines, because its the best its got. So when these acids are working in your stomach and there is nothing to digest except your intestines, it starts a chemical reaction that causes it to expand. This can happen with anorexics too. pretty sick huh?
