Oh, and by loft, i don't mean the expensive upscale yuppie-habitat ones.. I mean the real concept of loft: cheap, industrial and spacey

Everything in Manhattan is expensive. Places to look that are affordable and cool, artsy types are going to require subway rides to school. But who cares? The subway is great. It is cheap and you can put your ipod earphones in and read, or people watch, or just enjoy yourself. Everything is what you make it.
I would suggest looking in Williamsburg, Green Point, Ft Greene, Clinton Hill, Park Slope (a little pricier, but pretty) (all Brooklyn) or Astoria (queens).
If you are dead set on living in Manhattan, try the lower east side, but know that you will be paying a lot in rent!

If your father is Martin Scorsese, maybe you can afford a loft near NYU. NYU is the middle of Greenwich Village, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. There are NO cheap lofts (industrial or otherwise) anywhere in Manhattan & haven't been for at least 20 years. More likely you will share a 1 br or studio in a 100 year old building in the East Village with another student & split a $1200/month rent. Go to Craigslist to get an idea of what's available.

I wouldn't go near that place right now. There are going to be some major race riots after that weekend shooting involving that man who was about to be married. Stay away!
