anyone know what this is? My tongue has never been "smoothe" like a normal tongue...it has what appears to be cuts in it, but they don't heal (or bleed). sometimes they become irritated and painful but not too often...they are more just gross looking. any clues??

Most likely you have what is called a fissured tongue. Basically, there is/are ridge-like fissures running down the length of your tongue. It is nothing to worry about, you tend to see it every once in a while. Because these fissures are sometimes deep, the can tend to get irritated because debris and bacteria can accumulate within them. Just be sure to brush your tongue everyday (Yes, I said brush your tongue) to ensure that these fissures are clean and it will help prevent them becoming irritated.

I agree with Dr. Jon, above. I looked up "fissured tongue" on Google and got a bunch of references. (You might want to do this yourself, and see if the photos look like your tongue).

When I read some of the articles, and looked at the photos, I realized this is what MY DAD has! I never really thought about it having a name, but apparently it does! *chuckle* Apparently this weird but harmless trait is inherited. Fortunately, though, I do not have it.

It really is true that "you learn something new every day!" :) I didn't know any of this until tonight! (Thanks micg70 for asking about this, and Dr. Jon for giving what I hope is chosen as the Best Answer).

Fissured tongue is correct. There is another unfortunate name to it - scrotal tongue. That's why I remember it!
Geographic tongue is a different condition - it doesn't have fissues, but rather bald patches on it, like a map, hence the name.
