American Pit Bull Terriers are registered with many dog organizations as that....they are pitbulls. They are a purebred dog and are not any combination of two breeds. There were many dogs involved in the process of evolving the pitbull into what it is today but they go back to one main type of dog as with most other bully breeds called the "bullenbeiser" which is translated into Bull baiter.

In AKC these dogs are registered as American Staffordshire Terriers but in other associations amstaffs are registered as Pitbulls. Most believe that they are one and the same and the standard for both the AKC Amstaff and UKC pitbull are very very similiar. I heard a story that there were 2 main breeders starting to work with these dogs and one produced dogs with light or red colored noses. The other thought this to be an undesirable trait and only bred dogs with dark noses. The red noses became pits the black noses became amstaffs but they were equal in all other ways.

As for those that believe pitbulls are "messed up" you could not be further from the truth. Some of the best dogs I have ever known were pits. The problem is that pitbulls are attractive to some very unsavory people such as drug dealers, dog fighters etc. These people do not train these dogs properly and they do not realize that it takes a strong minded person to properly care for them.

Why dont you place your time to higher use,and support all the pitbulls in shelters to find homes, instead of including to the predicament, they are the first to be put down, doesnt say alot for the breed.People who have them, have them for a rationale, and the causes arent good.

Although sometimes misused to indicate other breeds or mixed breeds, 'pitbull' is a slang term that was originally coined to refer specifically to the American Staffordshire Terrier.
