I am a 26 year old guy. All my life I have had dry scalp, but with the appropriate shampoo I have kept that under control.

In the last year though the skin under my sideburns, and around my ears and nose gets so dry and brittle it is flaking off in big chunks making that area of my skin red and inflamed.

I asked my doctor and he said to mosiurize the area with baby oil and baby shampoo. I have tried both and still have this issue, nearly everyday after I shower and shave. What can I do?

It actually sounds like a condition known as Seborrheic Dermatitis; which can affect the scalp, sideburn area, eyebrows, sides of nose and ear canals. It often appears a scaley white patches which flake off leaving red areas. It can look almost like a butterfly pattern around sides of your nose under your lower eyelid. It is basically Dandruff of the face. Usually people who have it tend to have Olly skin. The cause is bacteria in the sebaceous glands that produce the oil on your face. I actually suffer from the same condition, and at first I thought it was either an allergy or weather related. It started off as flakes of skin in my eyebrows; I thought it was weird "can you get dandruff in your eyebrows?" I tried to use moisturizers to no avail. I finally went to a dermatologist to see if I was allergic to the dental masks that I use, and that is when I found out what it really was. Your dermatologist can prescribe you a corticosteroid cream that you can use once or twice daily. I use a medication called Desonide and it works really well. I hope that this is helpful

U have luck that ur skin is not OILYY, oily skin is harder 2 deal with. But don't worry, hon, the answer is simple: CREAM. They're some really good creams and cremes that u can use. Use Origins Hydratation Cream, it's really good and smells awsome!. But if u want home remedies then.. umm... why don't u try olive oil?. I've heard it's good. Put a bit of olive oit into a cotton ball and moist ur face with it. Then, leave it on 4 quite some time and rinse. Then repeat. Do that every day. And at night, don't take it off, and sleep with it, but put it on 2 hours BEFORE u go 2 sleep, cuz if u don't u'll get ur pillow all wet. Hope it helps!. And u can ask 4 the Origins product 4 Christmas!. Good luck and God bless!. oxox.

get a second opinion on your diagnosis, it could be psoriasis or you've developed an allergy to somethign you put on your face or hair.
I'd stop using one product at a time and replacing it with a product for sensitive skin first to rule that out. Each product can have a preservative in it that can cause irritation. I had to stop using liquid makeup because of this and I'd used liquid makeup for years before I suddenly became allergic!

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and use a face pack of ripe bananas and honey. You can find more cheap, effective and natural home remedies for dry skin at http://www.wellnesstalk.org/dryskin.html

I would try Aveeno (itch cream) I have a small spot that periodically comes on my eyebrow and this works wonders for me, worth a try I think. Good Luck. You know after it clears up then use a mild moisturizer to keep it in check. Avon Skin So Soft is good. Believe it or not they even recommend it to use on horses who have skin conditions. It works on them, too. We tried it.
