My biggest fear ever is losing my freedom and control over myself. However, I know that as a Christian I am supposed to surrender my entire life and self to God. How can I overcome my fear and surrender? I mean I am really scared to hand over the reigns, even if it is to a very loving God.

I should clarify my query by noting that I am not really a Christian; I was raised Catholic, but I quit the faith several years ago, and now I am slowly but surely working my way back to the Church.
Also, I meant "fear of the Lord" in a creative way... because I fear giving control to the Lord. Same deal with the reins/reigns. I know one holds reins, and that God reigns over His kingdom. It was a play on words.
So, not to be snarky about it, but for those of you who are chiding me, that's what I meant.

It is okay - letting God take the reins of your heart and life is a good thing - very freeing. The Bible says "The Truth will set you free" - that Truth is Jesus Christ. Get down on your hands and knees - talk to God - ask for His forgiveness - saying that you believe that Jesus is His Son, that He died, as buried and rose from the dead - that Jesus is who He says He is. You will be saved and God will take control of your life. Pour out your heart to God and He will come to you - He will show up. God promises that. I pray that you will take that step - God loves you - He wants to bless you and He wants to save you. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY - YOU CAN TRUST GOD. I will be praying for you. Blessings dear one.

Relax, you are kidding yourself about holding the reigns in the first place.
Nothing happens without God's will, and the sooner you tap into his power, the more empowered you will be.
It seems to me that you were brainwashed into believing the wrong stuff about God.
If you have a brain of your own, read "Rational Spirituality" available on the Dhaxem website, and if you understand it, you will be liberated of your fear, or at least of the drivel that others put into your head.
Where was your freedom, then?
Non-existing, mate! Out of what you say, for a long time ignorant folk were pulling the strings of your life, and you did not even notice.
I don't expect your 10 points, but you got the best advice, ever.

How can you claim to be a Christian and not trust God?
If you haven't already handed "the reins" over to Jesus, you most definitely are not saved.
The phrase " Fear God" is an old testament expression meaning a reverential awe of God, and identifying with His hatred of sin.

Freedom & control over oneself ,if you can see it in other perspective is actually an illusion. It 's a machanism of our mind to justify ourself of satisfaction and is the food of our Ego.
Think again, can you really have freedom where you can't tell what going to happen in the next min. Do you really think you have control over you tears even if you don't want to cry.
Don't fear God, if you do fear Him its a misconception.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Surrendering to God is pure genius.
He will take you on the journey of your life.
You will be more in control of your life ,then you are now.
You will see more ,know more, hear more, speak more.
The Holt Ghost will teach you all things.
God Bless

I think it is less about surrendering to God and more about deciding to walk with God. Few loving fathers have children for the purpose of ruling over them and controlling everything about them. Children of loving parents learn from them and journey with them through life sharing and growing together. I believe this idea is closer to the truth than many others.

Do not be afraid my friend. If you truly believe he will reward you the greatest gift of all.
