That "wet nose" is actually called a rhinarium and is associated not just with dogs, but with primates and other animals as well. As an aside, the moisture associated with the "wet nose" is what accounts for a dog's amazing sense of smell. As for the dryness being a sign of illness, that is only partially correct. If the dry nose is coupled with lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin, especially of the pads), and/or discharge from the eyes or nose, then, yes, the dry nose is a sign of serious illness. Otherwise, the dog may just be having a bit of "personal dryness." =0)

I heard that the wet nose helps cool dogs off, for dogs don't have sweat glands and can lose moisture only through the pads of their feet... and i'm not so sure thats true...what i do know is that a wet or dry nose doesn't determine the condition of your dog..so don't freak out if your dog's nose is dry :)

Actually, if it is winter usually, dog's nose are dry. And I think your dog's nose have been freeze up. But than in summer it's wet. But if their nose are not wet, don't worry, they're not sick

if your dogs has a wet nose, that means he is not sick, if he doesn't have a wet nose it doesn't mean they are sick or not sick. my dog sometimes doesn't have a wet nose and she still plays. but all dogs should have a wet nose the majority of the time.

They're wet to help catch scent. A wet object will catch items out of the air and they stick to it. Hence the wet nose. Wet or dry has nothing to do with health. Same with hot or cold, it's old information.
