On average how many times should an adult toy breed be taken outside to eliminate. I'm thinking about eventually getting a smaller dog. I have a golden retriever and take her out 3-4 time a day, could i put a smaller dog on this schedual. Also, i understand that toy breeds are hard to potty train, but eventually can you do it without any accidents.

My pom went out 3 times a day. He hated going for walks or going outside and he was very easy to potty train. I took him out at 8a.m./5p.m./10p.m. and that was always enough for him unless he was ill.

My sis has a Japanese Chin and she litter box trained it within a few days of getting her. She only goes out once a day for her walk and poop and she uses the litter box the rest of the day. (usually about 3 times)

My other sis has a mini Schnauzer who needs out about a dozen times a day. I believe he just likes running in the yard and it's more about playtime than it is about potty habits though.

I am always amazed when I hear people say toy breeds are hard to potty train.
All of my dogs have potty trained easily using the crate method.
The key is to be consistent.

Each adult will be a little different but 4 times a day is probably doable. Mine go anywhere from 4-7 depending on the dog. They like to go out and play.

yes you can put an adult toy breed dog on a 3-4 time a day potty schedule. and yes some toys never potty break depends on the breed. a kennel always make potty training easier and your pet will love theire little house. a puppy needs to out first thing in the morning after eating or playing and after napping all breeds have their own personalities do your research and good luck

How often a dog should be taken outside to eliminate depends more on its age than its breed. This interactive tutorial is excellent, I highly recommend that you do it: http://www.petplace.com/puppy-center/university/tutorial.aspx?id=5
While you're in the process of housetraining a dog, it will be necessary to take it out numerous times in a day (say, 10), but once it is fully trained, a toy dog would likely have a similar bladder schedule to your golden retriever.

And yes, toy breeds can be successfully housetrained with much persistent effort and patience. Dogs have a natural instinct not to mess in their sleeping area, so crate training and limiting areas of the house is a good idea.

I have a toy poodle who will be 1 in January. when we first got her at 8 weeks, we took her out every hour, and espeially after eating or playing or waking up. If we forgot, she would have an accident. If we were on the ball, with the every hour thing, she would usually do great. Now, she goes out about every 3 to 4 hours. Sleeps all night. Sometimes more if she has eaten recently. She hardly ever has accidents anymore. i think it just takes patients, and to remember that your little dogs just don't have the capacity to carry large volumes of urine and hold it for too long, as they are just small. :-) Good luck to you

i breed toy poms and i have had a really hard time potty training them, but as long as you stay consistent with the training you should have minimal problems. You can put down doggie pee pads for a while and it will save your floor and yes you can keep them on about the same schedule as a bigger dog, it just depends on the dog.
