It depends what type of set you are looking for and what price range.

For plasmas your top brands are generally Samsung, Pioneer and Panasonic

For LCD's your top brands are normally Sony, Samsung and Sharp

For budget LCD's look at Vizio and Westinghouse

For LCD Rear projection your top brand is normally Sony

For DLP your top brand is generally Samsung

Now, note that this is a generalization and different sets are sometimes hit and miss. However, it does give you a good starting point when you walk into the TV section and are overwhelmed with all the brands.

I always recommend everyone take time and compare televisions side by side. Make sure each television has its picture settings on standard and not dynamic or vivid to avoid the overly saturated picture settings TV's ship with. Take a few steps back and think about how you expect what you are seeing to look like in real life. The set that matches that most closely is probably your best bet provided it also has the features you want.

I'm an LG fan, but don't get hung up on brand names. Figure out your budget and find one with the best specs in that range. It will take some time to research it, but it's worth it in the end. Try the links to start with and good luck!

Check this website for information regarding HD TV from Sound and Vision Magazine which is one of the world's (maybe the world's) most respected authority in A/V technology:

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/information/1355/hdtv-info-center.html

You'll find all the specs and the industry's respected test labs results.

NOTE: It won't be a bad idea to put off buying a HDTV until new models incorporates HDMI 1.3.

Pansonic is voted the best for colors and contrast.
I vote LG/Zenith for the best bang for your buck. I have a Zenith 50" plasma. LG makes the Zenith TV's, but Zenith TV's are cheaper than LG.

I love Sony and buy only Sony products as far as TVs, Stereos, and DVD players.
