Spanish is more commonly used by a growing Hispanic population. In some parts of the country, it's the main language used, whether you like it or not.

In terms of worldwide, my understanding is that English, Chinese and Spanish are the most used languages. Definitely true in business.

There's no point in learning French if you already speak English because most people who speak French know at least some English. Also, French used to be the international language but now that English has by far taken its place, I would argue that French isn't too important anymore.

On the other hand, a lot of people who speak Spanish don't speak English and even in the United States, Spanish is widely spoken, not to mention most of the western hemisphere. Also, I think Spanish is much easier than French. I think you should take Spanish.

before answering the question I would need to know why you want a second language. if it's pleasure related then study a language that you find exciting or the country exciting or you know someone who speaks that language. if it's professional then choose the language that will provide you with the most bang for the buck- if many people speak Spanish for example then it would not be as much of a premium as Chinese,Japanese,German or Arabic. is this related to the field you wish to enter-being a linguist for a bank/company/etc.?

it all depends on where you live, what you do for a living or want to do for a living. if you live in the u.s. then spanish would be more beneficial to you, unless you plan to work with the haitian creole population in south florida, then french may be a better route. if you live or plan to live in montreal or quebec canada then i would learn french. if you are still undecided then learn both. there is no harm in learning 2 langauges and it would look good on a resume.

If you live in the US, Spanish is probably a better choices. (even that, I wouldn't choose French though. Chinese may be a better choice.)

But if you live outside the, I'd choose Chinese.
