It depends on the couple. If an Atheist marries a person of religion, the Atheist may get married in a church out of respect for the fiance. If they want a non religious wedding, they just may go to court or have a judge marry them on any other location than a church.
EDIT: JP, I so wanna go to your wedding.

It's a very unusual event. First, a justice of the peace or a non-sectarian 'minister' performs the ceremony of marriage. THEN...wait for it....there's a RECEPTION! Food is served, there is much socializing, dancing, eating, celebration of many kinds. At the end, the bride throws her bouquet and the happy couple goes off on their honeymoon. Weird, huh? Glad I'm not an atheist, cuz then I'd have to get married like THAT instead of the way religious folks get married. Which is basically the same... Oh. Nevermind....

It really depends on the atheist.
My wedding was nonexistent. We asked a friend of ours over to officially declare us married. She is a Methodist preacher. But then again, we did not want a big deal made of our wedding. The reception was the big party.
I've done a couple weddings for atheists. Some atheists like having the ritual of a marriage, though there is obviously no mention of God.
I haven't met such people, but I bet there are closet atheists who put on the sham of a religious wedding in order to appease their religious families.

Our wedding was non-religious, and consisted of the officiant doing some speaking, us repeating our vows, exchanging rings, him delcaring us married, and us kissing. Pretty much what you'd find in a religious wedding, except there weren't any mentions of God.
As far as location, it was at a local hall that is owned by our park district. We wanted to get married outdoors, but it rained.

Depends on the couple. Assuming I ever get to have mine, there's going to be lots of leather and half-dressed guests, and my vow to my mate will be, "I surrender myself and accept what's mine." I've got the whole thing thought out and written out... now I just gotta figure out how to make it happen before the few states with civil union/same-gender marriage get screwed over by the evangelicals.
