yes allah commanded women to cover their faces and head. its beauty and thats why we hide it from strange men. and yes it is in the quran. whatever is in the quran is what allah ordered us to do. please feel free to ask whatever u wanna ask.

I have ever read the Hadith like this (I dont know the original text, it just what did I still remember)
"Islam is strange at the first time... And It will become strange again in the end... So, how very lucky those strange people are.."
Be patient... Know that Allah was with the patient people...

I don't really have a problem with a scarf, I know plenty of young muslim ladies I went to college with who elected the scarf over the robe or the full veil. One young lady wore the robe but did not cover her face. I can live with that.
I do have a problem however with the full robe & face veil. It makes identification impossible at worse, and extremely difficult at best. While I do not mean to imply muslims are more criminally inclined, there is a major threat to security and safety for a society that tolerates a style of dress that hinders the ability of citizens and authorities to identify individuals. While there's no law against it, I feel that as a democratic society, we must continue to take the stance that religion and secular society have to meet halfway if the freedom of religion is to be celebrated. The full robe but with face exposed still has some issues but it at least reveals the face, and that's good enough in most law enforcement opinions, legally and professionally. No one I know has a problem with the scarf, and I think it's pretty petty if they do.
In short, cover the head, cool. Cover the body, no problem. Cover the face -- serious issues.

I know what you're saying, but to me all this fighting only seems to be done by the muslims and christians! I think the muslim women are looked at like that because they don't have a choice whether or not to wear the scarf...the nuns do have the choice!
But it seriously doesn't bother me, I really don't know why people are so immature when it comes to muslim women wearing their abaya!
=)
take care as well

A lot of people perceive it as oppressing to women. In the US a lot of women still remember when you were looked down on if you didn't wear a dress of at least a certain length. Then the women's lib thing came along. I remember myself having to wear dresses to school. It was so great when they started allowing girls to wear pants. I had always hated dresses. If I do wear a dress anymore it is to be more revealing, not covered. So some associate a particular dress code like head covering as suppression of individual expression and possible of women as well, from our own experience.

Well, in our area there are a lot of Orthodox Jews, and there are people who don't like them because they dress differently.
Very few nuns wear "uniform" here any more.
Human beings are always suspicious and a little frightened when they see someone dressed in a different way.
One other reason for hostility: Many people look on the veil as a sign of submission, and find that upsetting.

Perhaps the difference between a nun and a woman in a birka is that some women in birkas have been suicide bombers. Recently there was some 60+ year old woman who was a suicide bomber.
Let me think, the last time I heard about a nun on a suicide bombing was............um, never.
I think if you decide to live in a foreign country you must have some respect for their culture. For instance, refusing to uncover your face and have a photo ID in a western country post 911 is going to draw a certain amount of attention.
Likewise, if an American woman moved to Tehran and decided to wear a tube top and a mini-skirt, my guess is that she wouldn't be treated too favorably. She might even be killed. I haven't seen any muslim women being killed for wearing their birkas in America.

People are ignorant. They see a burka, and they point their gun. Once I got dirty looks because I had a blanket around my head on a very cold day.
People just want someone to hate. Be it gays, Atheists, Muslims, Jews, or ethnic groups. People have hated for no damn good reason.
