I'm really on the fence about immigration. From studying demographics and history, we know that we need "fresh blood" to stay strong as a nation. And I also believe that if you're willing to make the incredible journey to El Norte, you're probably good enough, tough enough to make it here. Everybody knows that immigrants 2nd generation outperforms "regular" American's in almost every measure - right? Actually I don't know that, haven't seen any solid evidence.

But... what about the healthcare costs, the language costs, the crime rate... sure there's lots of talk, but where's the evidence?

This is a plea for reliable data to inform this debate, pro and con. If you supply it, you'll get the points - and my gratitude.

This is not a joke.

Nobody is going to do the research for you. It's all on the internet. Last year Time Magazine did an amazing piece of research and the numbers numbed people. You are putting this up as if you were a first day teacher who didn't know anything about the subject. This whole subject has been written into the ground in YAHOO QA. Go back and read all out answers. For the best answer on the subject go to the question: "Why is the fear of immigrants (legal or illegal) so intense."
My answer is complete and compelling and without the put downs or head in the sand statements so often made here.
For something that will warm the hearts of pro-illegals and scare the no-illegals see my 360 blog tomorrow 11/30/06. Chilling.

A serious question, and I haven't any good data to share -- and I suspect that there isn't much. I doubt that the crime rate among the wetbacks is very high -- if busted, not only will they do jail time, but the migras will boot them out when time is served. The notion of trying to boot all the illegals, some of whom have been here for decades, is silly -- there are too many, and finding them would be impossible. My answer to this mess: provide a path by which the illegals could become naturalized. It can be more difficult than for people who came in by the gate. Let anyone who manages to get in be able to register. This would let them get a SS number and a job, and keep off the migras. After some years, any of these who has kept his nose clean, learned the language, and accumulated a net worth of $1000 can become a citizen.
