OK--First rule: make sure you have no heart or cardio problems; especially if you're elderly, or badly out of shape. Get a doc's OK before doing a sauna. But I'm guessing you are younger, and, assuming your health is OK, then: Like SnowDogz said: NO booze; it raises your heartrate and constricts your blood vessels and dehydrates you. All BAd things in a sauna! Also, make sure you're hydrated, maybe even bring in some water with you. Drinking water while in the sauna will add to the whole flushing out process. Also, don't go in the sauna right after strenuous exercise, while your heartrate is still up. Make sure it is down to normal before entering. That's about it. As far as time, just use your body as a judge. If you start getting uncomfortable or dizzy or feel your heartrate escalating, then vamanos! (You might think I'm over-diong it on the heart-rate thing, but trust me: hundreds of people have heart attack in saunas every year.
Have Fun.

Number one safety rule is not to be on anything in a sauna; no drugs or alcohol. Second is not to stay in more than 10-15 minutes. Your body needs to be at 98.6 degrees to function properly. If your internal temperature gets to high than your body shuts down and you die. That's why elderly people without air-conditioning die in hot climates, or children die when parents leave them in a car. Let your body cool down every 10-15 minutes, and then you can go back in the sauna.
