He doesn't. I would assume it is because he enjoys company. Good question though. The Bible doesn't really specify why. The only thing you can do is speculate based on who God is.

Jehovah created cherubs, seraphs and many other angels to do his will in the heavens. (Genesis 3:24; Isaiah 6:2, 3; Psalm 103:20) Jesus Christ is the Archangel over and above all of these. (1 Thessalonians 4:16; Jude 9; Revelation 12:7) The Bible describes the angels as being organized into “thrones or lordships or governments or authorities.” (Colossians 1:16; Ephesians 1:21) All of them serve at Jehovah’s command, unitedly doing the work he has for them to do.—Daniel 7:9, 10; Job 1:6; 2:1.

How many angels are there? The Bible indicates that hundreds of millions of angels were created, and all of them are powerful.—Psalm 103:20.

God’s Word, the Bible, tells us that when the earth was founded, “all the sons of God began shouting in applause.” (Job 38:4-7) Angels thus existed long before humans were created, even before the creation of the earth. This Bible passage also shows that angels have feelings, for it says that they “joyfully cried out together.” Note that “all the sons of God” rejoiced together. At that time, all the angels were part of a united family serving Jehovah God.

The angels minister to God and are utilized by him in many ways. Sometimes as spokesmen or messengers (Gabriel spoke to Mary about becoming pregnant with Jesus), sometimes to give comfort (angels ministered to Jesus and strengthened him), sometimes to rescue God’s servants (Daniel in the Lion’s Den, The Three Hebrews in the Fiery Furnace), and other times as executioners (The 10th Plague in Egypt, killing of 185,000 Assyrians).

While the angels are concerned about the welfare of those who serve Jehovah God, they are also involved in seeing to it that people learn about him and his purpose. The apostle John wrote: “I saw another angel flying in midheaven, and he had everlasting good news to declare as glad tidings to those who dwell on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people, saying in a loud voice: ‘Fear God and give him glory.’”—Revelation 14:6, 7.

Angels were definitely created for a purpose and they are staying very busy.

God does not NEED angels. In saying this, my intention is not to minimize the importance of what the bible teaches about angels. I am personally very thankful that God created angels. My point is simply that God does not NEED them as if He could not accomplish His ends without their assistance. Reformer John Calvin says God does not use angels out of necessity as if he could not do without them, for as often as he pleases, he disregards them and carries out his work through his will alone." Though God does not need angels, He nevertheless created them - for his own pleasure and for His own glory - to carry out various functions in His universe and before His throne.

I have always understood that angels were God's messengers; ie. Mary being told by the angel Gabriel that she was to bear God's son Jesus.

God doesn't "need" anything. He made angels - they are created beings - to glorify Him, to minister to others. They inhabit Heaven and glorify God - what a blessing.

I would think companionship. We all can get lonely, guess God would do the same, being eternal. I know I would hate to live for ever and ever and it just be me.
