I am interested in having my dog be a volunteer for patients or the elderly. Do you need a license?

I've used one of my dogs for therapy work in the past and to answer your question, no it doesn't take a license but there are forms you'll need to fill out and you will need to hook up with an organization in your area who will test you & your dog for safety reasons.

I would think if you wanted to set up an organization whose purpose is to bring others into the facility than you would be required to get licensing, insurance, etc for protection.

Here is a link for you to get acquainted to the requirements and help you find a group in your area.

I'm so happy you've decided to do this. I know you'll find it rewarding work.

Hope this helps

I am a current volunteer with both www.lendaheart.com and www.deltasociety.com...

I do therapy with my little jack russell. The first thing I recommend that you do is work with your pup and train them on all basic commands. Join a Basic Training class and than get your CGC (www.akc.org). The AKC website has a list of trainers who will certify you and your dog. It is a great certification to have no matter what! Both my jack russells are certified.

Look up local organizations on line or go to dog events and start getting involved in the dog community in your area!

Good Luck it's a wonderful and fun experience...
