I have been baking for decades. I used a wire rack once. I just let my cookies set on the cookie sheet for a bit until they go from hot to warm. Then I put them on dinner plates (one layer only until they are completely cooled).
To keep them fresh you must wait for them to cool completely. The put them n any plastic container with a lid or a large zip lock bag.

A wire rack is something you can buy at any discount store. It sits off the counter by a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch and lets the cookies cool faster without sticking. As far as keeping them fresh just put them in an airtight container as soon as they are cool.
Oh...and you don't really have to use one. You can put the cookies on a plate to cool also. Just don't stack them while cooling or they will stick together.

A rectangular wire rack is what I use... it allows air to get through to the bottom as well as the top. I let mine cool on the cookie sheet about 2 minutes then place on the wire rack to cool. It just depends on how you want to eat your cookies...Some like it hot my 3 year old hates them even warm. I store my cookies in a air tight container and eat them withing a couple of days. I love my pampered chef wire rack... but do not put in the diswasher! LOL

a wire rack is exactly that. I got mine at Walmart and they came in a 3 pack that stacks ontop of themselves to cool lots of cookies and stuff. They don't need to be there forever. Just long enough that they don't stick together when you put them on a plate or a bag or whatever.
Also, cheap trick.... Leave the cookie tray on the stove burners after you cook them, to cool. They cool just as quick. The wire rack just lets the air go through faster than just piling them all together and turning to mush.
Good luck.

I find it best to deal with fresh baked cookies this way:
Under bake them .
Let them sit on hot cookie pan for one minute after removing from oven.
Remove to cooling rack until have have firmed up enough to be lifted safely by hand (half hour?)
Store in Tupperware or some air tight plastic container and they may last to approx. four days

When you open your oven, you'll see the racks. For cooling cookies, etc., you would be using one in a smaller version.
To keep your cookies fresh, put a slice of bread in the container or bag with the cookies. This works for keeping brown sugar soft, too.

Um... it's wires welded together, so air can get under and around the cookies and cool them.
You cool them long enough so you don't scald your fingers or tongue when eating them!
Cool completely to save for the nest day... once cool, keep in airtight container or zipper bag.
