The UFC stands for Ultimat Fighting Championships.
This promotion puts two combatants into a ring surrounded by a cage . the two fighters are trained experts in thier chosen field of martial arts.. Any and All martial arts are invited to participate in these matches.. So you can have a Kung Fu grand Master fighting a heavyweight boxer. Or a master brazilian jujitsu master go up against Sumo Wrestler. Or a 16 th level grand master in tae kwon do like Chuck Noris go up against Mr Miyagi from the karate kid! lol Just kidding.. but I hope you get the idea.
its popular because you can have any martial arts master go into the ring and show his stuff off and prove his martial art is the best in the world. also.. you see somebody get their @$$ whupped!

The UFC is the larges Mixed Martial Arts orginization in the U.S. and possibly the world. Mixed Martial Arts allows fighters to use various discplines such as boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, judo and others to win fights by either knockout, submission (a joint lock or choke that causes the opposing fighter to "tap out"), or judge's decision.
The UFC has gained massive popularity recently due to a variety of factors, including a popular reality show and faltering popularity in competing events like boxing and pro wrestling. Fans are attracted to it due to the "reality" of it, it's about as close as you can get to a "real" fight while still being a sporting contest. The UFC has also done a very good job of promoting it's marque fighters to where each fighter has a significant following. Names like Chuck Lidell, Tito Ortiz, Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes (among many others) are becoming more recognized in the mainstream.

UFC is the Ultimate Fighting Championship, it's one of the most highly touted Mixed Martial Arts competitions in the world today along with PRIDE and K-1.
UFC was started back in '93 and was later restructured into the competition it is today.
I think the reason that it is so poular is that it allows competitors from different backgrounds in fighting disciplines to display their prowess, and it allows many different fighting disciplines within it's core of fighting without showing prevalence or bias to any ONE particular discipline of fighting.
although most of the fighters in the UFC have their core fighting backgrounds in Muay Thai and/or Jujitsu.

The UFC is a combination of Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and any other fight sports. The reason it is popular is because people love violence. That is why boxing is so popular.

boxing, martial arts, karate, a lot of this fighting stuff, its popular cuz its real, not like the wwe
