most likely it's social pressures.
you see, people act differently when they're around different people. i'm sure you act differently when you're with your friends than when you're with your parents. if you were with your friends in front of your parents, you would most likely feel inhibited somehow, because you wouldn't feel comfortable opening up.
That is most likely what he is feeling when he is with his friends and sees you. he feels inhibited (because he might be teased maybe?) and a bit uncomfortable with the situation.
now i'll betcha, if you get him alone, you won't get the same reaction.

Maybe he is shy. Maybe he dont want his friends in your business. If you really want to find out if he likes you you can do one of two things. !) Ask him when you are chatting through MSN or 2) Start acting the way he acts and see what his reaction is.

He's shy and worried what the others may think. Schedule a good time away from all of the drama and get your one on one time. Help him get over his shyness by trying to understand it. Ask him about it and listen to what he has to say.

As Wally Cleaver used to say, he is afraid that if he shows any affection the guys will "give him the business". He doesn't sound too mature.

Sounds like he doesn't feel like dealing with his friends giving him crap for liking you. Keep flirting, he'll eventually let them know. If not, find someone that loves to be seen with you ;)

He doesn't think his friends will approve of you, so he refuses to acknowledge you in front of them. This is demeaning and should be unacceptable to you. Have nothing more to do with him. Find someone who would be proud to be seen with you.

I'm guessing he is afraid of what his friends might think. That's usually the way it is in the beginning.

He likes you or he wouldn't talk to you at all. He is being tough or cool or something when his friends are around. I know its stupid, but its what guys do.
