I'm thinking about finding a job somewhere in the Manhattan area and living about no less then 20 minutes away and just commuting into Manhattan every day .. which time of the day is the traffic the worst? And where do you think is the best place to live on a middle-class based salary? Help please! :D

Kew Gardens, Briarwood, parts of Jamaica, all in Queens are decent places to live. (Safe and "Affordable" for NYC) Traffic is generally bad at all times, but 6am- 9am and 4-8pm are generally the worst. Don't drive.... you will pay an arm and a leg if you have to pay to park, get tickets, get towed, gas, and insurance. Live near mass transit. Also, studios in Queens go for an average of $900 a month and a 1bdrm goes for around 1100 a month which only includes heat and hot water. Middle Class doesn't cut it in Manhattan. Only the Rich or Poor can be there. Good luck in NYC.

I agree with the first poster, Astoria is the way to go. I do not make a lot of money but I am able to live there. it is close to the city and i have a 30-40 min commute to the west side of Manhattan.

Id live in NJ and take the train, bus, or ferry over. NY city is way expensive to live, you can't do it on middle class salary. Traffic is horrible at 9 am and 5 pm. I still would rent in NJ and commute over by public transportation.

i'm from so cal and moved right here 3 years in the past for undergrad. If climate is in any respect a undertaking, do no longer pass right here. human beings from southern California have not any theory how solid they have it while in comparison with Eastcoast/Midwest. iciness the place you're from lasts approximately from previous due Nov. to previous due Jan. you may actually proceed to exist on a $20 hoodie and positioned on turn-flops three hundred and sixty 5 days-around. iciness in long island lasts approximately from October to April, March in case you're fortunate. to no longer point out socks soaked in snow and sleet slamming at your face earlier you enter your apartment. 40 levels in San Diego isn't 40 levels in manhattan city. It gets VERY chilly over right here, and don't be shocked in case you finally end up actually staying in the entire day because of the fact it is so chilly. that's no longer the case in California the place there is by no potential a rain delay or snow day and your plans continually pass subsequently. Plus the aspects fluctuates like loopy right here, it quite is by no potential an analogous 4 days in a row. i like NYC for all it quite is properly worth, i do no longer choose a vehicle right here in comparison to l. a./Orange/San Diego, there is no longer everywhere in the US like it, yet be arranged for a marvel as quickly as the chilly comes around.
