Funny, that sounds more Taoist than Buddhist. I don't remember ever hearing a Buddhist quote that sounded like that, wait while I go check. Well it appears a few times so I guess it is valid.

I would Guess that Buddha was talking about how they should go begging. The monks were required to beg for their daily food and this is likely to tell them not to be a pain in the but about their faith to those they relied on.
Yes I think it would be good if missionaries were as inoffensive as Buddhist monks.

This is of course just my personal take on it.
thank you.

In some circumstances, yes. This can be a good analogy. In others, however, the missionary should be prepared to take the guise of a pair of pruning shears, and cut down dead wood!

Case in point, in Haiti/Dominician Republic some years ago, there was a minister of a Christian church in a poor area. One of the young girls in the neighborhood was kidnapped by the local brothel, and was about to be gang-raped into submission. The minister, along with some boys from the church, broke into the brothel, fought their way through the men there, and rescued the girl. She wasn't a Christian at the time, either, as far as I know.

Gentle bee, or pruning shears?

Whatever it takes.

only if youre buddist. Most missionaries go to other places to help people improve their lives. That passage sounds more like a thief in the night.

No, not at all! I myself I'm in atheist but I have a very deep respect for missionaries, & I believe what they are trying to do is to give not take! & I have always imaged missionarys as bold..but whatever..

That quote is irrelevant to missionary work - the missionary is not trying to take anything, but rather to give.

Your statement would be more applicable to camping, the forestry industry, syrup collection, etc.
