There are other answers to this question, but my hair is a little different. I have thick straight slippery hair (asian ethnicity) and I would really like to get it messy wavy for once in my life! Ha ha, um, so if anyone has any tips besides a perm. Thanks!

I understand. I'm asian as well. My hair generally tends to be straight. To give it that nice wavey look, I usually, right after I wash it, put mouse through it. Then I do two french braids. You know the kind that in the end look like pig-tails. I do two because one just doesn't do it right. I sleep like that and the next morning I take out the braids and put either gell or more mouse to keep the hold. I don't run my fingers through my hair when I put the stuff in, but crunch it up to give it extra "umph". Give it a try if you like. Hope that it works out for you!

I have super straight, fine hair as well. What I do is when I get out of the shower I don't brush it. Then I shake my fingers through it, toss it upside down, just mess it up as much as I can. I take liquid spray gel (you can get it at a grochery store) and spray it all over and do the whole process again. Then hairspray and a few minutes scrunching. It may sound like a lot of work, but it doesn't take that long and it looks fun. It is my lazy hair when I don't have time to dry and style it. Good luck.

You would have to unfortunately have to get a perm because a perm would soften the thickness of it and make it more manageable and if you go to a good hairdresser chances are you will get a good perm. I recommend using white and purple rods. those are the best for a body wave. No perm, lots and lots of struggle to get that wave and it will probably fall out within hours.

This works for me:

Put your hair in REALLY tight braids for about a day

Before you go to bed, take a shower (NO shower caps, let your hair get really wet)

Don't Dry your hair

Sleep with your hair like this overnight

When your wake up and undo your braids, your hair should be wavy

You do realize, that most men love straight hair, and women who don't have it wish they did.
