If the bowl is large enough for him to comfortably put his head in it without it being too deep or too narrow he hits his whiskers, he's probably "fishing" or hunting it.

I found my cat doing that one day, but she is actually not scooping it. The food was stuck between her teeth and also some pieces of wet food are bigger than others.
I got her food bowls from a pet store, it's called Cat's Butler. A set of water bowl and food bowl on a tray. Maybe you can use this instead of regular bowl that is too small or too deep for her.

More than likely it's a kitten reflex. All cats retain some little quirky trait from kittenhood. My at does the same, however she takes it in her mouth and moves it to another location. Cats also have a preference on how they like to eat. Maybe she doesn't like to eat in that particular bowl or she just likes the floor. You gotta love 'em!

Maybe his whiskers get in the way when the food is in the bowl. If it's a deep bowl, try a shallow one or a dish.

my dog does that. i think its cause they feel more comfy eating it off the floor. if you what this peice of advice too i put the dish in a shallow box. so that they can still eat it but when they push it out it goes in the box.

A couple of mine do this also..I spend lots of time picking up leftovers of wet food. I do keep a large washable plastic mat underneath their "buffet table" to avoid having to clean it off my bamboo flooring.

Lovemycat's answer sounds good to me-Inever thought about why they do it but all mine do. To the point where they have mats under the bowl to keep the mess down.

have you tried changing the dish type! i had a cat do this, and was surprised to find he didn't like his dish! once i gave him a different one, he stopped! it is cute when they do this, so i save the dish to show off his talent to my family!!!! :)

My cat, Toby does the same thing...! My vet said he is "asserting" his Independence! Like...pretending to get the food all by himself...as if he were in the wild, fending for himself! Aren't our cats cute? lol

He is probably imagining that he caught it. Grab it with the paw...eat it. He has a good imagination and he is amusing himself. Sounds perfectly natural to me. I have a few that came in off the streets that do that too.
