I am a nanny and am working for myself. Although I'm almost in the same boat you are. I've been with this family since the oldest was 2 years old he is now 5 1/2. but has 2 younger sisters 4 and 2 1/2. I'll be here until the 2 1/2 year old starts school (when she is 5). So I will soon be looking for new employers. I started out at a day care center. then one of the parents asked me if I'd be willing to take care of her 2 kids at their house. The best way to go about doing this is to post ad's anywheres you can. Get friends and family to pass of the information to people they know. I got my side jobs (watching kids once in a while by word of mouth).
In the end it is up to you to decide what to do. An agency does take a pretty big cut of your pay. But they also do background checks, and if for some reason you are really sick they can send someone else in your place. Another thing to think about is Do you want to worry about a W-2 at the end of the year. An agency will do all of this for you. If you do it by your self then you have to do it for your self.

An agency will do background checks and some marketing for you, but they'll take a big cut, too.
If I were you, I'd try it alone, if you can afford some advertising expenses. Do also use the free sites, such as Craigslist, etc.
Don't go to work for someone who wants to pay you under the table. It's illegal.
Do spend time with a prospective family before taking the assignment. Volunteer to babysit the kids for free a couple of times, so you can interact with them before deciding.
If it doesn't work out, give the family as much notice as possible. Preferably a month. It's REALLY hard to find a good nanny, and it takes time.

Well, I am 13, and in my lifetime I have had 6 nannies. All of them were self-employed. They would usually get paid $85 a day. So they would all go home on the weekend, unless my parents needed them for something else. I suggest you start by possibly cleaning homes. That's how a lot of my nannies started out, but then they stayed at home with us. 5/6 of my nannies were live at my home nannies. For groceries and etc what the kids want, you purchase it, keep the recipts, and then each week when you get paid, show you boss(the kids' parent(s)), what you spent on their kid(s), and they will add that to your pay check. Although when my nannies bought me gifts, that did not count as part of the pay.

JUST TO GIVE A LIL HINT OR ADVICE...I AM AN ENTRAPRNEUR, I DON'T THINK I SPELLED THAT RIGHT, BUT YOU GET IT.
IF YOU GO THROUGH AN AGENCY, THEY WILL BASICALLY MAKE YOUR HOURS AND YOUR PAY.
IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF WITHOUT THE AGENCY, YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN HOURS AND MAKE YOUR OWN PAY. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE GOOD EXPERIENCE IN THIS, AND HAVE GOOD REFERENCES.....THEN DO IT YOURSELF. MAKE SURE YOU GO AND GET A CPR CERTIFICATE TO MAKE MOMS MORE COMFORTABLE.
OTHER THAN THAT, GOOD LUCK.
HOPE YOU DO WELL. AND I HOPE I HELPED.
