My dad tried convincing me today that vanilla extract is poisonous, is this true or was he just pulling my leg?

if you're just using it for baking, you're all set (assuming you're not allergic to vanilla)...but if you drank it straight from the bottleI imagine it would probably make you sick to your stomach. However...if you add 1/2 teaspoon to a large glass of milk...it tastes a lot like eggnog.

There is a very cheap vanilla made in Mexico that is sold on the side of the road that is made out of the Tonka Bean. It tastes and smells like real vanilla. A lot of people get swindled thinking they are getting real vanilla for a good price however they are not! The tonka bean is the source of Warfarin and Coumadin. Warfarin is used in rat poison and Coumadin, which is a prescription drug. Both work by thinning the blood. In the case of the rat poison, it works so well that the rat actually bleeds to death internally. If ingested in a large enough amount it could be very dangerous. People on coumadin have to have their blood checked on a regular basis so their blood does not get too thin and cause THEM to bleed internally. I am NOT pulling your leg!

I do not believe normal vanilla made from real vanilla beans is poisonous.

I'd like to see where Dad gets his information!

No. There are not any extraordinary elements in vanilla extract. that's no longer something better than the manufactured from vanilla beans that were soaking in ethyl alcohol. that's purely that the vanilla essence is so reliable that many human beings's stomachs would locate it ugly in the adventure that they drink it instantly up. it will be a similar as in case you ingested a targeted dose of the different spice which includes a handful of cloves, curry, or black pepper. All you would possibly want to do is mix the vanilla extract in with soda or the different drink to reduce the concentration of the vanilla. It is going fantastically properly with Coca-Cola.

extracts are made from alcohol so it is a toxin. alcohol is a toxin -- you can kill yourself with it if you drink enough. its very hard to reach that point though. I think he didn't want you to try to get drunk off of it. For the record vanilla extract is made by soaking vanilla beans which are an orchid seed pod in alcohol. Its an alcohol extraction process. Amazing huh?

He is absolutely pulling your leg or strikingly misinformed. Vanilla extract is yummy and the next best thing when you don't actually have vanilla beans.

He's pulling your leg. Vanilla is very strong, but not poison.

My alcoholic son has resorted to drinking vanilla extract. Each time I m aware of that he s been intoxicated on it, he has basically projectile vomited several times in one "using". It may not be poisonous, but in quantity, it may be revolting to your stomach.

The extract is alcohol based, so unless cooked, it could poison you, if taken in a large enough dose.

Not poisonous, just strong. However, like mouthwash and anything else based on alcohol, it has to be kept away from alkies and druggies, coz they will, in fact, poison themselves drinking something that is not meant to be consumed in any quantity.

If you are young, you can get alcohol poisoning from it. So therefore yes, your dad was right and it is just as poisonous as any liquor.
