And do they have some primitive idea as to what death means/entails? If you think so, explain.

Yes there are lots of animals which know when they are going to die. Some even travel to special places to die. As far as their thought process of what to expect from death, humans haven't even answered that question yet beyond guesses.

I think elephants do - they will find bones where elephants have died and carry them around and seem to be really fascinated about them - kind of like mourning. they don't do that with bonesof any other animal.

I would think they would almost have to have some sense of self preservation, otherwise why run away when a predator comes after you.
